Contractions aren’t the enemy: Understanding what your body is doing during labor.
If you've never been through labor before, chances are you've pictured contractions as something to survive.
Brace yourself.
Hold your breath
Wait for it to end.
Then do it all over again.
It's how labor is often portrayed in movies and on TV, and it's what many people naturally assume they should do.
But here's the truth:
Contractions aren't something to fight. They're something to work with.
Every contraction has a purpose. It isn't random pain or your body working against you. It's your uterus—a powerful muscle—working in perfect coordination to help your baby make their way into the world.
Each contraction helps soften and open your cervix. It gently guides your baby lower into the pelvis. It encourages rotation into the best position for birth. Even when progress feels slow, your body is often accomplishing incredible work that you can't see.
When you understand what's happening, labor begins to feel different.
The intensity may still be there, but it no longer feels meaningless. Instead of wondering, "Why is this happening?" you can remind yourself, "My body is bringing my baby closer with every contraction."
That mindset matters.
Research shows that fear and tension can increase the perception of pain during labor. When we're afraid, we tend to tighten our muscles, hold our breath, and resist what's happening. Unfortunately, that tension can make contractions feel more intense and exhausting.
Instead, try to meet each contraction with relaxation.
Take a slow breath in.
Exhale slowly.
Relax your jaw, your shoulders, and your hands.
Allow your body to soften rather than brace against the contraction. Think of riding a wave instead of fighting against it. Every wave has a beginning, a peak, and an end, and every contraction does, too.
This doesn't mean labor won't be challenging.
It means you'll better understand why your body is doing what it's doing.
Knowledge doesn't eliminate the intensity of labor.
It removes the confusion.
And when you replace fear with understanding, you create space for confidence.
Whether you're planning an unmedicated birth, an epidural, or aren't sure yet, understanding contractions can help you approach labor with more calm, more trust, and more confidence.
Your body was designed to do this!
And every contraction is one step closer to meeting your baby.
