Fertility Support 101: Tips from a Former Fertility Nurse
By Candace Stewart, RN, CLC, and Doula at Compass Doula & Lactation
Hello, wonderful families! I’m Candace, the founder of Compass Doula & Lactation, where I draw on my experience as a registered nurse, certified lactation counselor, and doula to guide you through life’s big moments. As a military spouse of 25 years, I’ve learned patience and perseverance, and raising my two grown sons has shown me the joy of building a family. Before becoming a full time doula, I worked as a fertility nurse, helping couples navigate the ups and downs of trying to conceive. Today, I’m excited to share some Fertility Support 101 tips, blending my professional insights with a touch of personal understanding to support you on your journey.
Trying to conceive can feel like an emotional rollercoaster, but you don’t have to go it alone. Here’s what I’ve learned that might help you feel more empowered and informed.
Tip 1: Track Your Cycle Like a Pro Using Ovulation Predictor Kits for Ease
Understanding your ovulation cycle is key. Back when I was trying for my boys, tracking ovulation meant charting basal body temperature – a process that took time a precision. These days, ovulation predictor kits (OPK’s) make it so much easier! Just pee on a stick, and you’ll get a clear signal when you’re about to ovulate–usually 12-36 hours before it happens. As an a fertility nurse, I’ve seen how these kits take the guesswork out of timing, and I can guide you on choosing the right one for your needs.
Tip 2: Nourish Your Body for Fertility
A healthy diet can make a difference. When I worked in fertility, I saw how nutrients like folate, iron, and omega-3s supported reproductive health. Load up on leafy greens, nuts, and fatty fish, and consider a prenatal vitamin early. I always kept my own fridge stocked with these when trying for my boys—small habits add up! Stay hydrated too; it’s a simple way to support your body.
Tip 3: Manage Stress with Gentle Care
Stress can throw off hormones, and I’ve seen it affect many couples I supported. As a military spouse, I know life can get hectic, so I’d suggest gentle stress-busters like deep breathing, a short walk, or even a cozy night in. If anxiety creeps in, I’m here with RN-backed tips to help you find calm—because a relaxed mind can support your body’s natural rhythm.
Tip 4: Know When to Seek Support
If cycles are irregular or conception takes longer than a year (or 6 months if you’re over 35), it might be time to consult a doctor. Back in my fertility nursing days, I helped connect couples with specialists for tests or treatments like IUI or IVF. Don’t hesitate to reach out—I can guide you through what to ask and offer emotional support along the way.
Tip 5: Build a Support Team
You don’t have to do this alone. I leaned on my husband and friends when building my family, and as a doula, I’m here to be part of your team too. Whether it’s a listening ear or practical advice, having support can lighten the load. At Compass Doula & Lactation, I bring my fertility nursing experience to help you feel cared for every step of the way.
You’re Not Alone on This Path
Fertility journeys are unique, and I’ve seen both the struggles and triumphs up close. My goal is to support you with the knowledge and compassion I honed as a fertility nurse and the empathy I’ve gained as a mom. Whether you’re just starting or seeking extra guidance, I’m here to help.
