Why I started Compass Doula & Lactation: My Journey As An RN and Lactation Counselor
By Candace Stewart, RN, CLC, and Doula, Compass Doula & Lactation
Introduction
Hey there! I’m Candace, the heart behind Compass Doula & Lactation. If you’re expecting, planning a family, or navigating the newborn days, you’re in the right place. I’m so excited to share why I launched this business and how my journey as a Registered Nurse (RN) in women’s health and a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) led me to become a birth and postpartum doula. My passion for helping families create families and supporting them through every step drives everything I do. Let’s dive into my story and why I’m here for you!
From Women’s Health to Doula Work
As a nurse, I spent years working in women’s health, specializing in reproduction, fertility, and IVF. Those days were filled with moments that lit me up; helping families navigate the emotional rollercoaster of trying to conceive, celebrating their victories, and being a steady presence during tough times. Whether I was counseling a couple through IVF or supporting a mom-to-be in the clinic, I loved encouraging families as they worked to create the family of their dreams. That work showed me how much families need not just medical care but also heartfelt support, which is why I felt called to become a doula; to offer that extra layer of care during pregnancy, birth, and beyond.
Why Lactation Counseling Is Close to My Heart
When I became a mom, breastfeeding was one of the most rewarding yet challenging parts of my journey. I struggled with latching issues and worried about whether I was doing it “right,” but I didn’t always have someone to turn to for encouragement or practical advice. Those moments of doubt made me realize how much new moms need a supportive voice to guide them through feeding their baby, whether it’s breastfeeding or another method. Becoming a Certified Lactation Counselor let me be that voice for others. Now, I love helping moms navigate those early days, offering tips to ease latching struggles, boosting their confidence when supply feels low, or just listening when they need to vent. My own experience as a mom drives me to make sure every parent feels supported and empowered in their feeding journey.
The Spark for Compass Doula & Lactation
Compass Doula & Lactation was born from my love of guiding families through the journey of creating and welcoming their babies. The name “Compass” reflects my goal to be your guide—helping you navigate pregnancy, birth, and postpartum with confidence and ease. My years in fertility and IVF taught me how to support families through complex emotions and big moments, and I wanted to bring that same care to doula work. Whether it’s holding space during labor, offering postpartum tips, or cheering you on as you feed your baby, my mission is to make your journey feel empowering and joyful.
What Makes My Approach Unique
My time in women’s health, reproduction, and IVF gives me a deep understanding of the emotional and physical sides of starting a family. As a doula and CLC, I combine that knowledge with hands-on support tailored to you. I’m here to answer your questions, calm your nerves, and celebrate your wins, whether that’s a smooth birth, a successful breastfeeding session, or just getting through a tough postpartum day. My nursing background helps me navigate medical settings with ease, but my focus is always on you; your needs, your goals, and your family’s unique path.
Why I’m Here for You
I started Compass Doula & Lactation because I believe every family deserves a supportive guide as they create and grow their family. My years in women’s health showed me how powerful it is to counsel and encourage parents through life-changing moments, and now as a doula, I get to do that in an even more personal way. From fertility dreams to birth plans to those first weeks with your baby, I’m here to make it all feel a little easier. Let’s make this journey one to cherish!
