What to Expect from a Birth Doula: A Step-by-Step Guide
By Candace Stewart, RN, CLC, and Doula at Compass Doula & Lactation
Hello, beautiful families! I’m Candace, the heart behind Compass Doula & Lactation. As a registered nurse, certified lactation counselor, and doula, I’ve had the privilege of supporting families through some of life’s most transformative moments. I’m also a proud military spouse of 25 years, which has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of a strong support system—values I bring to every family I work with. My two amazing grown sons have been my greatest teachers, showing me the power of love and connection from the very beginning. Today, I’m excited to share a little about what you can expect when you work with a birth doula like me, step by step.
If you’re expecting a little one and considering a doula, you might be wondering, What exactly does a birth doula do? I’m here to walk you through the process, so you can feel confident and supported as you prepare for your birth journey.
Step 1: Getting to Know Each Other (Prenatal Meetings)
Our journey begins well before your due date. When you choose me as your birth doula, we’ll schedule a few prenatal meetings—usually two or three—to connect and plan. These meetings are all about understanding your vision for your birth. Whether you’re aiming for a hospital birth, a home birth, or a birthing center, I’m here to listen. We’ll talk about your hopes, fears, and preferences, and I’ll share tools like breathing techniques, comfort measures, and positions that can help during labor.
As an RN, I can also provide insight into the medical side of things, answering questions like what certain procedures might involve or how to advocate for yourself in a hospital setting. My goal is to help you feel prepared and empowered, no matter where or how you choose to give birth.
Step 2: On-Call Support as Your Due Date Approaches
Starting around 37 weeks, I’m on call for you 24/7. I know how unpredictable those last few weeks can be—trust me, I’ve been there with my own boys! Whether you have a late-night question or start feeling those early contractions, you can reach out to me anytime. I’ll check in with you regularly to see how you’re feeling and offer encouragement. This is also when I make sure I’m ready to drop everything and be by your side when labor begins. As a military spouse, I’m used to being ready at a moment’s notice, and I bring that same dedication to your birth.
Step 3: Labor and Birth Support—Your Biggest Cheerleader
When labor starts, I’ll join you wherever you’re birthing—your home, the hospital, or a birthing center. My role is to provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support. I’ll help you through contractions with techniques like massage, counterpressure, or guiding you into positions that ease discomfort. I’ll remind you to breathe, offer words of encouragement, and help you stay focused on your birth plan.
One thing I love about being a doula is creating a calm, nurturing space for you to bring your baby into the world. I’ll work alongside your partner (if you have one) to make sure they feel involved and supported too. As an RN, I can also help you understand what’s happening medically and advocate for your wishes with your healthcare team. Whether your labor is 6 hours or 26, I’m with you every step of the way—no matter how long it takes.
Step 4: The Golden Hour—Welcoming Your Baby
Once your baby arrives, I’ll stay for about an hour or two to help you settle into those precious first moments. This “golden hour” is so special, and I’ll support you with things like initiating breastfeeding (drawing on my CLC expertise) or simply giving you space to bond with your little one. I’ll also make sure you have water, a snack, or anything else you need to feel comfortable as you transition into this new chapter. Watching families meet their babies for the first time is one of the greatest joys of my work—it reminds me of holding my own sons all those years ago.
Step 5: Postpartum Check-In
Our journey doesn’t end at birth. A week or two after your baby arrives, I’ll schedule a postpartum visit to see how you’re doing. We’ll talk about your birth experience, how you’re adjusting, and any challenges you’re facing. I can offer tips on newborn care, breastfeeding, or self-care, and as an RN, I can help with questions about recovery or when to reach out to your doctor. This visit is also a chance for closure—a moment to reflect on your incredible strength and the journey we shared.
Why Choose a Birth Doula?
Having a doula means having someone in your corner who’s there just for you. Studies show that doula support can lead to shorter labors, fewer interventions, and a more positive birth experience overall. But more than that, it’s about feeling seen, heard, and cared for during one of the most sacred times in your life. As a military spouse, I know how vital it is to have support when you’re navigating big transitions, and I’m honored to be that support for you.
